Information for Beginners

SKC conducts a 6-month beginners course up to 4 times a year.  Currently, due to space constraints, SKC will only conduct one class each in April and October.

There are no pre-requisites and everyone above 13-years of age may sign-up, but potential members are urged to read and consider the following very carefully.

One, Kendo may be physically demanding and members are reminded that they will need to be healthy and reasonably fit to participate. And be mentally prepared to follow strictly to rules and etiquette of Kendo.

Two, all beginners are required to attend BOTH and EVERY Wednesday evening sessions (1930hr till 2100hr) and Sunday morning sessions (0900hr till 1030hr) in Changi for the duration of their course. Absentees will be discouraged from continuing, as they will disrupt the progress of the class.

Every class is limited to 30 students and pre-selections are held just before the start of each class. Commitment, strong interest as well as determination are essential in the practice of Kendo. Should you have any doubts, please discuss them before joining the class as you may deprive others of a chance to join.

There are no course fees. But when confirmed in a class, with effect from 1st October 2005 you will be required to pay a one time registration fees of $10, and a monthly fees of $30 (membership fees and induction fee, subject to changes without further notices) for a period of the 6 months course. You will be required to buy your own shinaii (bamboo sword) which costs between S$50-100. As you progress, you will be asked to buy the uniform and in around 3-4 months, depending on your grasping of the basics, you will be asked to purchase the armour, which starts from S$600 for a machined stitched set to a few thousand for a hand-stitched set.

The Club does NOT supply nor trade in these equipment.  However, a few of our members do bring in these items from Korea and Japan and you may like to purchase your equipment from them. There are also internet based shops you may contact.

If you have carefully considered the above and would like to be contacted for the next class, please email : enquiries@singaporekendo.org.sg with your name, telephone number, email address, sex, other contact details, NRIC and occupation.

We will contact you nearer the time for the selection with venue and timing details.
